This crispy Korean vegan tofu brings bold flavors to your table in under 30 minutes. Crispy on the outside and tender inside, the tofu is coated in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce that packs a punch. Serve it over rice, with veggies, or in lettuce wraps for a satisfying main dish that’s perfect for quick weeknight dinners or meal prep.

Vegan korean spicy tofu

This dish was inspired by the Korean dish dakgalbi, which typically has chicken in a spicy gochujang-based sauce. By swapping out the chicken for tofu and adjusting the sauce ingredients, we’ve created a vegan version that has all the flavors of the original. The air fryer or oven-baked method ensures the tofu gets crispy without deep frying, making it a healthier alternative with the perfect texture and taste.

Why you’ll love this recipe

This crispy Korean vegan tofu is a winner because it nails both texture and taste. The tofu gets nice and crispy on the outside but stays soft inside, and the gochujang sauce brings a perfect mix of sweet and spicy. Tofu is packed with protein too, so you’re getting a filling meal that’s good for you.

What keeps me coming back to this recipe is how all the flavors work together. The spicy gochujang paste, tangy rice vinegar, sweet maple syrup, and zesty lime juice make a sauce that’s seriously good. If you like really spicy food, just add more crushed red pepper – it’s up to you. If you’re a fan of Korean food, you have got to try this recipe!

I love how easy this Korean-inspired dish is to make and how well it fits into different meals. You can use the air fryer for extra crispy tofu, or just pop it in the oven. It goes great with rice, in lettuce wraps, or with any veggies you have on hand.

Ingredients needed

The full list of measurements for each ingredient is in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Tofu – Firm or extra-firm tofu works best for this recipe since the texture of the tofu is denser compared to silken tofu or soft tofu and there isn’t excess liquid that needs to be squeezed out.
  • Olive oil – For coating the tofu before cooking.
  • Cornstarch – Helps make the tofu crispy.
  • Gochujang – The star of our sauce, this Korean red chili paste brings heat and an umami flavor to the Korean tofu recipe. If you have trouble finding it, look for it in your local Asian market.
  • Maple syrup – Adds sweetness to balance out the spicy tofu recipe.
  • Rice vinegar – For a tangy kick.
  • Lime juice – Adds brightness to the sauce.
  • Garlic – Fresh is best, but pre-minced works too.
  • Crushed red pepper – Leave this out if you don’t like a lot of heat.
  • Water – To thin out the sauce.

Note: I reccomend an air fryer or oven to cook the gochujang Korean tofu. Serve with rice, lettuce wraps, or your favorite veggies.

How to Make Crispy Korean Vegan Tofu

how to make spicy tofu

Prep the tofu. Cut the tofu into cubes. Toss with cornstarch, then coat with olive oil.

Cook the tofu. Air fry the pieces of tofu for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through, or bake in the oven at 425°F for 30 minutes, flipping halfway.

Make the sauce. While the tofu cooks, whisk together gochujang, maple syrup, rice vinegar, water, lime juice, crushed red pepper, and cornstarch in a saucepan.

Cook the sauce. Heat the mixture on medium high heat, whisking until it bubbles and thickens. Remove from heat.

Combine. Once the tofu is crispy, toss it with the sauce.

Serve. Serve your Korean tofu dish in rice bowls, lettuce wraps, or with your favorite veggies.

Storage and serving

Vegan korean spicy tofu

This crispy Korean vegan tofu is best served fresh when the tofu is at its crispiest. If you have leftovers, they’ll keep in the fridge in an airtight container for about 3 days. To maintain the crispy texture, store the tofu and sauce separately.

When reheating, the air fryer works great to crisp up the tofu again. You can also pop it in the oven for a few minutes. Warm up the sauce separately in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water if it’s thickened up.

Serve this Korean BBQ tofu as a main dish over jasmine rice or in lettuce wraps. It also pairs well with side dishes like steamed or stir-fried veggies. For meal prep, you can cook the tofu and make the sauce in advance, then combine them just before eating to keep the tofu crispy. I love to top it with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and some sliced green onions right before serving.

Recipe FAQs and Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free) to the sauce.
  • Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds over the finished dish for added crunch and nutty flavor.
  • A drizzle of sesame oil at the end can really elevate the dish with its rich, toasty taste.
  • Make sure your tofu is well-pressed to remove excess moisture. This helps it get crispy.
  • Don’t overcrowd your air fryer or baking sheet. Give the tofu cubes some space for the best crispiness.

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can prep the components ahead, but for the crispiest tofu, it’s best to cook it just before serving. The sauce can be made in advance and stored in the fridge.

What if I don’t have an air fryer?

No problem! The oven method works great too. Just be sure to flip the tofu halfway through cooking for even crispiness.

Can I use a different protein?

Sure. While this recipe is designed for tofu, you could try it with tempeh or seitan. Just adjust cooking times as needed.

This crispy Korean vegan tofu is a great way to enjoy the bold flavors of Korean dishes if you’re following a plant-based diet. It’s amazing how a few simple ingredients can create something so tasty. The contrast between the crispy tofu and the sweet and spicy sauce is really satisfying. You’re going to love this amazing recipe!
